The calculator starts from the tripod's rated load capacity and derates it for two conditions that reduce real-world margin: an extended center column (which acts as a taller, thinner lever arm) knocks the effective capacity down by 15%, and windy conditions knock it down by a further 25%. It then recommends staying at or below 70% of whatever effective capacity remains, which is the rough range photography and video guides commonly suggest for a safety buffer.
“Safe” means your gear is at or under that 70% recommendation. “Marginal” means you're over the recommendation but still under the effective capacity — usable, but with less margin for vibration, an accidental bump, or a gust of wind. “Overloaded” means your gear exceeds even the derated effective capacity.

A manufacturer's rated capacity is usually measured under ideal, static, lab conditions — legs at their widest, center column fully retracted, no wind. In the field, an extended center column acts as a longer, thinner lever arm that flexes more under the same weight, and wind adds a dynamic load the rating doesn't account for. Staying at roughly 50-70% of the rated capacity leaves margin for both.
How much does an extended center column really matter?
