How to Set Your Tripod to the Perfect Shooting Height
It's a small thing that quietly ruins a lot of shoots: a tripod set at the wrong height. Too low and you spend the session bent over the viewfinder, back aching by the second hour. Too high and you're on your toes trying to see the screen, nudging the framing every time you settle back down. Getting the height right the first time — before you even start composing — saves more discomfort and more ruined frames than almost any other adjustment.
The goal: eye level, not "tall enough"
The comfortable target for most standing shooting is a viewfinder or rear screen that sits roughly at eye level when you stand naturally, without stooping or straightening up onto your toes. That's a different number for everyone, since it scales with your own height — a tripod that's perfect for someone 165cm tall will have a 185cm shooter working at an awkward stoop all day.
Working out your number
A useful shortcut is that eye height is roughly 93% of standing height for most adults. So someone who is 175cm tall has an eye height of very roughly 163cm. From there, subtract the height your camera and head add on top of the legs — typically somewhere around 12-18cm depending on the head and how the body sits on it — and what's left is the leg height that lands the viewfinder at eye level. That same 175cm shooter, with a 15cm camera-and-head stack, would want the legs alone reaching to roughly 148cm, with the center column left retracted.
Why the center column is the wrong first tool
It's tempting to buy a shorter, lighter tripod and simply wind the column up to reach the height you need. Resist that instinct where you can. A raised center column turns the tripod into a taller, thinner lever arm, and even a small amount of extension noticeably reduces stability — the same wind or vibration that barely moves a tripod with the column down can produce a visible wobble once it's cranked up. Sizing the legs themselves to reach your working height, and reserving the column for the occasional extra few centimetres, keeps the sturdiest part of the tripod doing the height-bearing work.
Leg angle is part of the height equation too
Most tripods offer two or three leg-spread angles, and the widest, most stable setting is also the shortest one for a given leg-section extension. If you find yourself constantly extending the column to make up for using the widest leg angle, it's worth checking whether a narrower angle — accepting a slightly smaller footprint — gets you to height with the column still retracted. It's a trade worth making in calm conditions where the reduced footprint isn't a stability concern.
Sitting, kneeling, and low-angle work
Not every shot calls for standing height. For a seated setup, the same math applies but starting from your seated eye height rather than standing height, which is roughly 120cm for an average adult sitting upright — a very different target that most tripods can reach with the legs alone at a shorter extension. For deliberately low-angle or macro work, many tripods can splay their legs flat or invert the center column, trading working height for the ability to get the camera down near ground level.
A height that's slightly wrong is easy to live with; a stability problem isn't
If you have to choose between a slightly imperfect height and an extended, wobblier column, take the height compromise. A tripod that's a few centimetres short of ideal costs you a bit of stooping; one that's fighting to hold position because the column is stretched to its limit costs you sharpness in every frame. Get the legs sized for your body first, and treat the column as the fine adjustment it was designed to be.
