Choosing the Right Timelapse Interval for Clouds, Traffic, and Stars
A timelapse lives or dies on one setting: the interval between shots. Get it right and hours of slow-moving clouds compress into a mesmerizing thirty seconds of footage; get it wrong and the motion either stutters awkwardly or barely appears to move at all. The trick is that there's no single correct interval — it depends entirely on how fast your subject crosses the frame.
The underlying math
A finished timelapse video needs one still frame for every frame of the final clip, so the total number of shots required is simply your target video length multiplied by the playback frame rate — a 10-second clip at 24fps needs 240 stills. Divide your total shoot duration by that number of shots and you get the interval: the gap between one shutter press and the next. Shoot for an hour to fill that same 240-frame, 10-second clip, and the interval works out to 15 seconds between shots.
Fast subjects need short intervals
Anything that visibly moves across the frame within a few seconds — traffic on a busy street, people crossing a plaza, fast-moving low clouds — generally looks smoothest with an interval in the 1-5 second range. Push the interval much longer than that for a fast subject and the motion starts to look jerky or strobe-like, jumping between positions rather than flowing.
Medium-paced subjects: sunsets and slow clouds
A setting sun, slowly drifting clouds, or the tide coming in typically look best somewhere around 5-10 seconds between frames. This is the classic "golden hour timelapse" range — fast enough that an hour of real time compresses into a satisfying clip length, slow enough that the motion still reads as smooth rather than jumpy.
Slow subjects: stars, construction, and plant growth
Subjects that barely seem to move at all from one minute to the next — the night sky rotating, a construction site progressing over days, or a flower opening — need intervals stretching from 20-30 seconds up to several minutes or more. Star timelapses in particular often use intervals in the 15-30 second range to balance smooth star motion against each frame needing enough exposure time to gather sufficient light.
Working backward from the footage you want
Rather than picking an interval first and hoping it works out, it's usually more reliable to decide how long you can realistically shoot and how long you want the finished clip to be, then let those two numbers determine the interval. A one-hour sunset shoot destined for a 10-second, 24fps clip needs a 15-second interval; stretch the shoot to two hours for the same clip length and the interval doubles to 30 seconds, which suits a slower-moving sky better anyway.
Why a solid tripod is non-negotiable
Every timelapse compresses hundreds of individual frames into a few seconds of playback, which means any inconsistency between frames — a slight shift from wind, a bump, or a tripod slowly settling into soft ground — becomes glaringly obvious once played back at speed. A timelapse is one of the least forgiving uses of a tripod precisely because there's no single bad frame to blame; a wandering camera shows up as the entire shot subtly drifting or shaking throughout.
Battery and storage math matters too
Longer shoots at short intervals add up to a lot of frames — a two-hour shoot at a 3-second interval is 2,400 shots — so it's worth checking your camera's battery life and card capacity against the shoot duration and interval you land on, ideally with a buffer, before committing to a long unattended timelapse.
Mechanical shutter wear is a real consideration
A camera with a traditional mechanical shutter firing every few seconds for hours racks up actuations quickly — a two-hour shoot at a 3-second interval alone is 2,400 shutter cycles, and a full-day timelapse can run into the tens of thousands. Most mirrorless cameras offer an electronic shutter mode that avoids this wear entirely for stills timelapses, and it's worth switching to it for anything longer than a short sequence, both to protect the shutter mechanism and, in many cases, to eliminate the small vibration a mechanical shutter introduces at each frame.
Testing the interval before committing
Because a timelapse can't easily be redone once the light or the moment has passed, it's worth shooting a short test run — even just twenty or thirty frames at your planned interval — and reviewing it as a quick preview before committing to the full multi-hour sequence. This catches problems like an interval that's clearly too long or short for how fast the subject is actually moving, a tripod that isn't quite as steady as it looked, or a focus setting that needs locking down before the real shoot begins.
